"Self-Portrait", November, 1998

This was painted alla prima in about a two-hour span while I was visiting Gary Everest.  He and his wife, Michele lived in east Tennessee for a few years following their return from Italy.  We were introduced by Mr. Jim Reynolds, a local Realtor who had worked with both of us.  Toward the end of Garys first visit to my home, he rather sheepishly asked if I would consider taking him on as a student.  To paraphrase the film, "Casablanca", it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.  I've seldom seen anyone as doggedly determined to learn and improve.  He still has this painting and it's my fondest hope that it is a gift worthy of the spectacular Italian repast Michele prepared that day.

  1. Mr. Matheny,
Your self-portrait proudly hangs in our home today as it has since you painted it. We still can hardly believe you produced it in such a short time. And yes, it was more-than-adequate "payment" for the dinner!
